Assist the Officer is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that provides immediate, short term financial assistance to Houston Police Officers and their families during times of critical need. Assist The Officer symbolizes the appreciation for every officer’s dedicated service and commitment to the safety of citizens.

Officer Darrin Ashford

Senior Police Officer Darrin Ashford was diagnosed with Stage four Lung and Thyroid cancer with Mets to the liver, bone and moving to the brain on October 18, 2025. He has undergone two extensive surgeries, for the blood clots in the lungs and ten rounds of aggressive radiation. He has been assigned to rehabilitation center and will need in home care during treatment and recovery.  The continual financial impact on him and his family has been devastating.  Officer Ashford is the main source of income assisting with his daughter who lupus and also has stage five kidney failure.

Officer Ashford is unable to provide for his family financially in the manner he has prior to the cancer diagnosis.  Officer Ashford treatment is a concern along with the mounted of medical bills.  He is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment with the future cancer treatment plan, changing based on his weekly response to treatment.  Officer Ashford graduated from University North Carolina Capel Hill.   He is an 18-year Veteran of the Houston Police Department.  Please, consider donating to show your support to Officer Ashford and his family during their time of need.

Officer Sean Brinson

Officer Sean Brinson, with Huntsville police, is currently in critical condition after his patrol car was struck head-on by a suspect fleeing in a stolen vehicle on Tuesday, 12/16.  He is pending multiple surgeries for his severe injuries.  His wife and 2 small children are requesting prayers for his recovery.  Please, consider donating to the Brinson family during their time of need.

Annual 9/11 Heroes Run

The Travis Manion Foundation annually welcomes runners, ruckers, and walkers of all ages to honor and remember the heroes of September 11th. This event is critical to helping Americans fulfill a promise to never forget and share the significance of that day with future generations. Assist the Officer – Houston is very fortunate to be included as one of the benefiting recipients for this incredibly successful event held every September. Badges & Bogeys Golf Tournament

Our annual golf tournament is held every October to help raise funds for
Assist the Officer’s general fund which is used to provide immediate financial
assistance to Houston Police Officers and/or their families that have applied
for critical assistance, as well as daily operations. The teams are very limited

Heroes’ Gala

The annual gala recognizes and celebrates the amazing men and women of the Houston Police Department. Nominees are from the Houston Police Officers’ Union’s Officer/Investigator of the Month program. Each HPOU winner is automatically nominated to be the Heroes’ Gala Officer or Investigator of the Year, and the gala winners are invited to Washington DC for Police Week. The gala is held in March and sells out quickly!

Houston World Series of Dog Shows

The Houston World Series of Dog Shows graciously invites Assist the Officer and HPD K9s to their annual dog show hosted every July at NRG to educate and interact with fellow dog lovers.  The dog show includes meeting our special HPD K9s, learning K9 first aid through demonstrations, and learning more about Memorial Hermann’s Life Flight for critically injured police dogs.  ATO volunteers are present to discuss the Retired HPD K9 Fund that helps with the veterinary costs incurred by handlers after our K9s retire.
